Concert recording: Beethoven's overture "The Consecration of the House"

Paavo Järvi conducts a work that once opened a theatre.

The title "The Consecration of the House" sounds pompous. But it actually only indicates what this work was once written for: the inauguration of the Josefstadt Theatre in Vienna on 3 October 1822. Beethoven adapted an earlier composition for this occasion, which he had created for August von Kotzebue's festival play "The Ruins of Athens". He composed a new overture in solemn C major for it - which, as the performance with Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich shows, has long since secured its own place in the repertoire, even without the rest of the work.
