After the Swiss Music Festival (Schweizerisches Musikfest) in Zurich in 1867, interested parties succeeded in founding a public limited company in 1868 with the aim of promoting the city's musical life with a permanent orchestra. Twenty years later, when negotiations for the construction of the new Tonhalle were finalised, the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich also had to be restructured financially and organisationally. The previous public limited company was dissolved and an association was created in 1891, which was to be the sponsor of the company and thus the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich until 30 June 2020.

With the entry in the commercial register on 13 February 2020, the association founded the new Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG as the sole shareholder. By means of a transfer of assets under merger law, the company, including all employment relationships, was transferred to the public limited company as the new owner in summer 2020. At the same time, as part of an ordinary capital increase, music lovers were given the opportunity to express their solidarity with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich by purchasing so-called collector's shares and to help build the new institutional foundation. And despite the severely restricted concert programme at the time due to the pandemic, this opportunity was actively used.

The Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich organises more than 150 concerts and events of all kinds every season. It plays an important role in shaping cultural life in the city and region and is closely connected to the people of Zurich in the city and canton through a wide range of partnerships, collaborations and, not least, its broad-based shareholder base. In addition to the concerts in the renowned Tonhalle Zurich, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich goes on international tours and carries Zurich's reputation as a vibrant city of music out into the world's music centres.
