Margarita Balanas on the move

In the 2024/25 season, all four of Paavo Järvi's previous assistant conductors will conduct the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. Reason enough for an update!

Interview: Ulrike Thiele

When Paavo Järvi works with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürichh, an assistant conductor sits in the hall with him. These are young conductors who learn from him, but also support him, for example by checking the sound balance in the hall or comparing what they hear with the scores. Occasionally, they conduct themselves - even after their "term of office" has ended.

In the current season, all four previous assistant conductors are leading the orchestra. Where do they stand today? And what do they take away from their time in Zurich? Their answers to these questions are as different as they are.

Margarita Balanas has been Assistant Conductor at the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich since the 2023/24 season and has conducted two family concerts this season.

Margarita, we're talking in September 2024 - what projects are you currently pursuing?

I've just returned from concerts in Portugal and Spain. I conducted the Orquestra do Algarve there: Beethoven's Violin Concerto with my sister Kristīne as the soloist. In Zurich, I am assisting at Paavo Järvi's concerts and at the same time preparing my own project with the music of Anna Thorvaldsdottir. At the end of the month, I will be playing Saint-Saëns' cello concerto in London and conducting my own orchestra ANONIMI, with which I combine chamber music and charity.

What did you take away from your time as Assistant Conductor?

The experience of being Assistant Conductor has only deepened the absolute need for music in my life. I am very happy and grateful that I can experience this dedication and passion at every performance with Paavo and the orchestra.

What is your most memorable encounter with the orchestra?

I love recording projects. Anything that involves an intensive rehearsal process, from finding differences in the scores to working on details of interpretation. It's absolutely satisfying to hear how every little change makes a big difference.

Which statement by Paavo Järvi can't you forget?

Something Paavo says to many young conductors when they are leading a world-class orchestra like ours: "Know when you are needed." And: "Less is more" - especially with regard to overly expansive beat patterns when conducting.

What advice would you give to future assistant conductors?

Every day as an assistant conductor is different: sometimes you listen from the auditorium with open ears, sometimes you lead an acoustic rehearsal or a workshop, then you are a detective and examine different sheet music. Get fully involved - with all your spontaneity.
