Completion of the Mendelssohn Cycle
We end our journey into Felix Mendelssohn's world of sound with the popular «Lobgesang».
There are few composers who speak to him as directly as Mendelssohn, says Paavo Järvi. That is why he has launched a Mendelssohn cycle in the 2020/21 season; five symphonies and the «Midsummer Night's Dream» have already been performed and recorded. They will be released in a CD box set towards the end of this year.
Now the grand finale will take place in the concert hall: the Mendelssohn cycle will be concluded with the «Lobgesang». This «symphonic cantata based on words from the Holy Scriptures» was one of Mendelssohn's most popular works even during his lifetime. In it, he combined biblical quotations and texts by Martin Luther, parts of earlier works and new compositions into a rounded, original whole.
In our performance, the Israeli singer Chen Reiss sings the great soprano part, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich teams up with the Zürcher Singakademie. And Paavo Järvi will work with them all to ensure that the music speaks not only to him but also to the audience.
The Mendelssohn cycle is supported by the Hans Imholz Foundation
