This concert marks the first appearance of this year's focus artist Kirill Gerstein. The American pianist will play Rachmaninov's "Paganini Variations", and he will undoubtedly be interested in more than just virtuoso fireworks. Music Director Paavo Järvi, who has known Gerstein for a long time, describes him as a "thinking interpreter", as someone who is not only interested in the scores, but also in their contexts. Otherwise, this programme follows on from earlier ones this season: Once again, for example, there is a work by British composer and Creative Chair Thomas Adès to discover. His orchestral piece "... but all shall be well" is "intimate, meditative music, intricately and lovingly crafted", wrote "The Observer" about it. And then - one week after Bartók's "Dance Suite" - the "Concerto for Orchestra", one of his most popular works, will be performed.
