Paavo Järvi has long wanted to perform works by Arthur Honegger and record them on CD, "not just because he was Swiss, but because he was a good composer". Now our Music Director is conducting the Symphony No. 2 for strings and trumpet to kick off his Honegger project. The work was premièred in Zurich in 1942 under the direction of Paul Sacher; its sombre mood reflects the catastrophe of the Second World War, until a chorale at the end gives a hint of hope. Shostakovich's violin concerto is also characterised by the time in which it was written. And then there is also the Adagio from Mahler's unfinished Symphony No. 10: another work that will be released on CD as part of our Mahler cycle.
