Orchester-Lunchkonzert mit Paavo Järvi
Orchester-Lunchkonzert mit Paavo Järvi
The programme booklet for the joint Rachmaninoff cycle by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Opernhaus is available in printed form at the ticket office and at the CD stand on the evening of the concert (CHF 5).
Rachmaninoff was severely criticised by his contemporaries for his palatable melodies. If he relied on more subtle means, however, it was not right either; his Symphony No. 3, composed on Lake Lucerne, at any rate reaped rather sour reviews at its premiere in Philadelphia in 1936. Nevertheless, Rachmaninoff was convinced "that this is a good work". One thing is certain: it is one that hints at emotions rather than exploiting them - and thus lures empathetic musicians out of their shells.
