"In the River" is the theme of the chamber music matinees this season. The river has long been a soul companion of the German Romantics. A symbol from nature, it stands on the one hand for the passing of time and the transience of life, and on the other hand for the bubbling spring out of loneliness that leads to love. At the beginning of the programme, our musicians around Christopher Whiting have placed the ever-flowing piano quartet by Gustav Mahler. This is followed by three compositions by Beethoven on folk songs from the British Isles surrounded by water. These lead through nostalgia and timelessness to one of Schubert's masterpieces, the "Trout Quintet", with its well-known song of the same name as an introduction.
