When the new Tonhalle organ was designed, the goal was an instrument that would blend with the orchestral sound. How well it does this will be heard in Howokawa's "Embrace" – a work in which the merging of organ and orchestra is understood as a metaphor of an embrace between two people. The subtitle "Light and Shadow" then also fits the second work of the programme: the Czech composer Josef Suk had actually intended his second symphony, named after the angel of death Asrael, as a homage to his deceased father-in-law and inspirer Antonín Dvořák; when his wife also died, the work became a double requiem. At the same time, it signalled a new beginning, for in this symphony Suk found his own, extremely sonorous style.
