To kick off this year's International Organ Days, our focus artist Iveta Apkalna will be performing the "Symphonie concertante" by Joseph Jongen. This work for organ and orchestra is probably the best known by the Dutch composer and organist. It was written in 1926/27 as a commissioned work for a very special organ: it is neither in a church nor in a concert hall - but in a department store in Philadelphia. It is accompanied by Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique": without an organ, but with a variety of orchestral sounds that was new at the time.
The International Organ Festival Zurich 2024 is curated by organist and focus artist Iveta Apkalna and Prof. Tobias Willi, in consultation with Dr Hans-Peter Fricker, President of the Friends of the New Zurich Tonhalle Organ Association.
