She is a star in her South Korean homeland – and therefore a stroke of luck as a soloist for the performances of our orchestra in Seoul. But before things get started, Bomsori Kim, who trained at the Juilliard School and has long since arrived on important Western stages, makes her debut at the Tonhalle Zürich with Carl Nielsen's Violin Concerto. Nielsen was himself a gifted violinist who played at village festivals from an early age and after his studies took up an orchestral post at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. He composed his only violin concerto when he was 46 years old and had high expectations of the musicians as well as of himself: He wanted it to be "rich in content, popular and brilliant, without being superficial". In addition, there are works by Beethoven and Brahms, which Paavo Järvi and the orchestra will also take with them on their Asian tour.
