Discover the 2022/23 season

Dear audience,
The programme for our new season is here, and there are numerous highlights to look forward to – as well as a few innovations.

On the one hand, our Music Director Paavo Järvi will continue to explore the Bruckner Cycle. On the other, he will also have you raving about a new concert format. In the tonhalleCRUSH series, not only will he be conducting, but will also be explaining the works performed, before vacating the podium for our musicians to engage in jam sessions.

The concerts featuring the protagonists of the new season are also sure to be highlights: in very different programmes, you will be able to experience both flautist Emmanuel Pahud and Fazıl Say, pianist and composer, as our Focus Artists (Fokus Künstler). Toshio Hosokawa, Japan’s best-known composer, who develops his very own «calligraphy of tones» in his works, will be taking over the Creative Chair.

Several of Hosokawa’s works will be performed as Swiss premières over the coming months, and Emmanuel Pahud and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich will even be giving a world première performance at the opening of the season in mid-September. Even if the Tonhalle has long since become your musical home, there will be plenty of new discoveries for you to make – here and elsewhere.

For all those who have never or only rarely been here, we have also come up with something special under the heading «Your début» («Ihr Debüt»): with a low-priced trial subscription, first-time subscribers will be able to immerse themselves in the world of classical music at four concerts. In addition to the new tonhalleCRUSH series, the now legendary tonhalleLATE concerts and the Filmsinfonik (symphonic film music) series will also make for unusual concert experiences. And finally, under the motto «classic of the classics» («Klassiker der Klassik»), we also recommend some concert programmes featuring works that you will certainly have encountered in films and advertisements, or as mobile phone ring tones – and which can now be heard live with us.

What else? There are many other things worth mentioning – the concerts featuring the Tonhalle organ, which will continue to be used in many ways during the second season since its inauguration, for instance. Or the family concerts (Familienkonzerte), which will continue to take place both at the Tonhalle and in various community centres throughout the city (Zürcher Gemeinschaftszentren). Or the Chamber Music Lunch Concerts (Kammermusik-Lunchkonzerte), which this season will be dedicated entirely to the theme of nature – an important source of inspiration, and not only for our Creative Chair, Toshio Hosokawa.

If you would like to know more about our plans, Director Ilona Schmiel and Music Director Paavo Järvi will tell you all about it in the introduction (Intro). Find out about everything else by leafing through the season programme or clicking through the concert calendar here on our website. Speaking of the website: there, too, you will discover some new features and an expanded range of background texts in the coming months.

We look forward to the forthcoming concerts – and to welcoming you!
