How does a season begin to sound? The answer to this question is particularly vivid this time: "Dawn" is the name of the nine-minute piece by British composer Thomas Adès, who will be helping to shape the coming months as Creative Chair in various roles. This "dawn" is meant literally, when a radiant, dazzling sound gradually emerges from the silence. This sets the stage for the other two works in this opening programme: Sol Gabetta, who will also be performing in various formats as a focus artist in the upcoming season, will play Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2, the second movement of which is characterised by a song from Odessa. And Paavo Järvi conducts Rachmaninov's epic Symphony No. 2: a work that the composer honed for years after the fiasco of his first symphony and which received unreserved acclaim at its premiere in 1908.
