The first Beethoven work in the Beethoven Year 2027 is his Op. 1 No. 1: an almost symbolic prelude to various Beethoven projects that will follow in the coming weeks and months. This piano trio was a first major success for the composer himself: he published his Op. 1 at his own risk - and earned so much money from it that it was enough to support himself for a year. The "Archduke Trio" was composed a good twenty years later, and its premiere was Beethoven's last performance as a pianist: his hearing had already deteriorated considerably by this time. "In the forte, the poor pigeon struck so hard that the strings rattled, and in the piano he played so delicately that whole groups of notes were missing," reported the violinist Louis Spohr. This problem will undoubtedly not arise with the Hoppe Poltéra Brautigam Trio, which one reviewer once described as having a "quasi-magical empathy with one another".
