Beethoven composed 16 string quartets; over a period of around a quarter of a century, he developed the genre from the Haydn succession to the late works that point far into the future. In the Beethoven year 2027, the Belcea Quartet and Quatuor Ébène will perform all of his quartets - not in chronological order, but in such a way that different creative phases stand side by side.
In this concert, the Quatuor Ébène presents the String Quartet No. 1 from the early collection op. 18 - and juxtaposes it with two of the most famous quartets: The "Harp Quartet", which was given this nickname because of the pizzicati in the first movement, and the "Razumovsky Quartet" No. 3, named after its dedicatee, in which Beethoven demonstrated his art of composition in a quasi-Russian folk tone and an almost caricature-like minuet, among other things.
