Beethoven composed 16 string quartets, and over a period of around a quarter of a century he developed the genre from the Haydn succession to the late works that point far into the future. In the Beethoven year 2027, the Belcea Quartet and Quatuor Ébène will perform all of the quartets - not in chronological order, but in such a way that different creative phases are juxtaposed.

In this concert, the Belcea Quartet juxtaposes the early G major quartet with two very different late quartets: For Quartet No. 14, which lasts almost 40 minutes, there are no less than 600 pages of sketch material - a clear indication of how intensively Beethoven worked on this seven-movement work. In terms of form and length, the Quartet No. 16 is again more in keeping with the earlier norms, although its musical language repeatedly goes beyond them.
