The 17th century was particularly characterised by two composers: Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. They epitomise German – and English – Baroque music. There were undoubtedly other important representatives of this period and other geographical areas. Among them are their contemporaries Georg von Bertouch (died in Oslo), Hinrich Philip Johnson (died in Stockholm) and Johan Henrik Freithoff (died in Copenhagen). Embedded in chants and cantatas by Bach and Handel, musicians from the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich present the compositional ancestors of today's well-known Nordic composers: A trio sonata each by Bertouch, Johnson and Freithoff will be performed, providing an insight into the baroque music of the Nordic world.
