For the past year, the Belgian Wies de Boevé has been playing as the principal double bassist in the orchestra – and now he can also be heard as a soloist. He presents a concerto by Giovanni Bottesini, who was himself a virtuoso on this instrument (and also a sought-after conductor who, amongst other things, conducted the world premiere of Verdi’s ‘Aida’). Like the other works in the programme, Bottesini’s double bass concerto will be conducted by participants in the Conductors’ Academy, which is taking place for the first time before the start of the season. And even though all the pieces were composed in the 19th century, the young conductors will be able to showcase their skills across a wide range of styles.
At the end of the concert, our Music Director will invite one participant to the Pärnu Music Festival with the Paavo Järvi Scholarship, and the audience in the hall and at home will be able to decide who should win the audience prize .
